What is the Brush Battle?
The Brush Battle is a painting competition where artists compete to finish a work of art in 25 minutes in front of a live audience. Attendees vote for their favourite, and the top 5 from each round move on to the finals to compete for a cash prize. The 2026 Brush Battle took place on Saturday, April 11th from 6 to 10 pm in Old Quebec Street Shoppes in Downtown Guelph.
Each art piece went up for sale via a silent auction following rounds 1 and 2, with 40% of the proceeds going directly to the artist. The remaining 60% will help support 2026 programming and operating costs for the Guelph Tool Library. Due to a technical glitch with our auction page, the round 3 auction was delayed and will be open until April 19th at 11:55pm – find all of round 3 here. Unsold works from rounds 1 and 2 have been relisted here, and will close at the same time as the round 3 auction.
How can I attend?
The 2026 Brush Battle has ended, and was 100% sold out! Stay tuned for an announcement about a 2027 event!

Desiree has been a fun loving amateur for over 40 years, and enjoys working in any media. She creates art for pure joy, and has more time to explore now that she is retired.

Jack Massie
I am largely focused on imaginative paintings that deal with the blossoming relation between internet culture and human interaction. A lot of my paintings interpolate the properties of digital images and videogames, which creates a quality I am always drawn to, seeing the digital world actualized in the real world. I am also fascinated with making something mysterious or separate from our lived experience, because these fun ideas become real when they are materialized as paintings.

Emily Vander Vlugt
I approach my work as a painter using colour and light to explore ideas before they take form. I use a range of materials from gouache, pencil crayons to mixed media, but prefer acrylics as my primary medium. Although I am professionally known as a goldsmith/ jewellery designer, painting has been at the core of my designs. I have a strong connection to our community with collections based on iconic Guelph architecture and as an executive on the Guelph Studio Tour, and with my painting “No Justice, No Peace”.

Kailey Dunauskas
I am a multidisciplinary artist, although recently, I have been working with paint and collage the most. My favorite works are those which I have done in mixed media because of the experimentation that comes from mixing materials. My subject matter is generally animals, plants and landscapes due to commissions, but I have created a handful of abstract pieces as well.

Kate Young
I have been drawn to art for as long as I can remember, and my childhood passion has grown into a lifelong practice (and now recently a business). For the past 10 years, my focus has been on creating abstract paintings using acrylics. I am drawn to vivid and bold marks, and rely heavily on palette knives and scrapers to create layers of paint and medium that interact to create rich texture and movement. Rather than working from a fixed plan, I instinctively respond to the painting as it evolves, reaching for colours that speak to me in the moment.
